We do join in tableau when we have same data source like if you have connected to a SQL server and you want to take data from two different tables in a database, then you can do joining.
However, if you want to merge data from different sources like Excel and SQL, then, in that case, you need to go with data blending.

There are several differences:
1. Whenever you save anything on tableau public, it will keep on the cloud, and anyone can see your data and dashboard but not in case of tableau desktop.
2. There is no option of life and extract connection in tableau public; however, it is there in Desktop.
