I would say 2-3months for a good grasp and decent everyday conversation. But this will happen if you start by learning to speak today. Do not worry that you do not know a lot. People are generally very accomodating to those making an effort to learn the language. Just say: "Naanu Kannada kali-tidi-ni" (I'm-Kannada-learning), and ask them "Nimma Hesaru Yenu?" (Your-name-what?) or "Yenu MaaDtidira neevu?" (What-doing-you?). Small steps. Listen to songs or advertisements. Repeat after people. Get a feel for the language for the first week. Then you can start off.
