From my personal perspective, Chinese calligraphy do benefit me a lot from both physical and mental aspects.
I was forced to learn Chinese calligraphy by my parents when I was about 7 or 8 years old. It was extremely hard for me to get used to the way of holding Chinese brush and weird style of writing. But I gradually got pleasant every time I wrote a character in a balanced structure which would also brought me a sense of beauty. Before starting to learn Chinese calligraphy, I was that kind of kid who never sit still which made my parents annoyed. I learnt to be patient and stay focus during the period of writing. Besides, I also have to keep a certain rhythm of breathing in order to make smooth strokes of a Chinese character. It can also be regarded as a good way to get your inner peace because nothing can disturb you along this process.
On the other hand, learning Chinese calligraphy would be one of the best way for you to approach Chinese traditional cultural and make sense of some complicated characters. Since I started my university curriculum which related with Chinese traditional cultural a lot. I was astonished to find that many of the characters I was once wondered why should write in this order or in a certain shape could be explained in such a interesting way.
