when we look at time spent in our life a considerable amount of time goes in work & profession. It becomes important to know how do you have planned to spend this substantial amount of time.
We have to make sure how and where and what to select to make a career. To make this choice a bit better it is indeed a good idea to choose a career counsellor. Rather than plunge into what your relative suggestes. It is not necessary that everything the other person has done should be applicable to you. There is no one shoe fit our strategy, it has to be customized. That is why I call my career Team "Career Design expert". Design is required to customize as per the needs of a particular person. Let's look at the qualities and expertise that a career counsellor may have in the new age to figure the future.
1)See that the expert uses reliable and valid tests.
Can you tell someone's future with a fingerprint reader? may be. Don't fall for pseudo testing that happens on a big level. Sometimes testing is not even required. Unless you are doing strength based career choices. Look out for people who conduct tests like DBDA or DAT. Even if it all depends on the interpretation it would still give you results of your ability. Remember, these abilities and results keep changing they are at this particular instance that you have got these results. Don't consider these results as permanent lifelong.
2)Don't test only abilities
Abilities is just one part of your personality. you are made up of much more than that. your pattern, your confidence, your flexibility and your relationship with yourself all matter. Don't choose a counsellor who does only one test and jumped the gun. Select an expert who will look at all your strengths. Ensure that the assessment happens in all different levels.
3)career counselling must also be combined with skill counselling
May be you are good at it and one section is good for you. The counselling should not stop here. It should also tell you what must be done About your selection. what must you do more to get the desired results. career comes from the word carrrius (Latin) meaning path way. That is why don't look in the session as a destination giving sermon. Ensure that your counsellor tells you what next 2-3 years will look like the pathway. what to follow, whome to follow, what to read and where to focus in the coming years. Sometime even brief study skill Counselling may also be required.
4) Choose an expert who is updated.
This is challenging but very important. A counsellor may be having a 20 years of experience in career counselling but might not be updated. Many such Counselor keep suggesting a feilds that have no future. Or have less or no demand. one of the factors of career is that the world must need you and you must get paid for it. A premitive cousellor may know your skills but suggest you outdated field.
