Although Britishers officially declared that they wanted to do the partition because of the administrative convenience. A smaller Bengal could be governed easily and more efficiently.
But the hidden motive was different. Around the beginning of the 19th century, most revolutionary activities were being carried in Bengal, which was being noticed by the British officials. They wanted to crush the sentiment of Indian nationalism right at the start.
Also, by dividing Bengal so that it would create a province with a Muslim majority, they wanted to divide Hindus and Muslims on a communal line. They thought in this way; they could eliminate the Muslim force from the overall national movement.
