To be honest I think it is fine to be "rude" when you are learning a language. People will know that you are learning a language and won't get mad at you for saying "what is your job" straight away in a conversation. Being polite is something you learn with time, and you also have to be able to "read" the situation to see if it is actually appropriate to speak more elegant.

Don't try to imitate anyone : it sounds totally false and people might think you're laughing at them. Use your own best accent. If necessary - that is to say, if people have difficulty understanding you - get help with sentence stress and pronunciation. Expand your vocabulary so that you have a choice of words at your disposal and don't always repeat the same old formula. Keep sentences short and simple. Many people try to impress by using complex sentences but, in all honesty, the most elegant English consists of simple structure. Make sure the register of your language is consistent; never mix formal with informal. It's probably easier to maintain formal register until you are very sure about the person you are talking to. I hope this helps.

Steps Image titled Improve Your Knowledge of English Step 11 Read any English language newspaper aloud and slowly. Go as slowly as possible in order to understand the meaning of what you are reading, including nuances. While the structure of English is fairly simple in comparison to many other languages, its idioms make it a more difficult language to adequately master. Image titled Improve Your Knowledge of English Step 22 Find some children's books. Those containing many parables, fables, short stories, and legends are good because they are easy to read and carry interesting messages as well. Reading such stories will give you a better understanding of the words, and you will improve your vocabulary through reading. Children's books with illustrations, such as illustrated dictionaries, are an excellent resource for those learning English as a second language. Image titled Improve Your Knowledge of English Step 33 Prepare your own dictionary of words. Every day, try to write down some of the key new words that you have mastered that day. Go through this dictionary once a week so that you recall the meanings of these words and they permanently stick in your memory. Every time you go through this dictionary, visualize the meaning of those words. For example, for the word "hallucination," try to imagine what the word actually means - you might try to picture someone having a nightmarish dream while awake perhaps. This visualization method will make you understand the subtle differences between similar words such as "consent" and "permission," while also accepting that English has such a rich vocabulary that often you simply need to learn as many new words as possible that all carry similar or identical meanings! Image titled Improve Your Knowledge of English Step 44 Construct your own sentences using the words that you have noted in your dictionary. Use those words in your daily conversation with your friends and in your written communications. This will sensitize you to the new words. Image titled Improve Your Knowledge of English Step 55 Be methodical. If you follow this method for the next few weeks, then using new words will become a habit. Image titled Improve Your Knowledge of English Step 66 Read aloud as often as you can. If you are shy of others, you will be only a victim. Therefore, you should never hesitate to take the initiative and engage people in conversation. Reading aloud will help provide you with the extra confidence that you can speak the words clearly and in the right context.

The one problem every beginner faces while trying to wax up their eloquent or gain fluency, is whenever they indulge in two way communication they start to fumble over the words. This is a very common and most of us go through this phase. The problem is de facto arises because we start to focus on our language rather than the information we supposed to deliver. While communicating just follow this: Take a pause, do not haste and shift your concentration to the information you are supposed to deliver. Then keeping it in the subconscious focus on the language and try to construct it in most effective way possible. Do a quick review what your sentence going to look like. Deliver the sentence. This might look a little bit cumbersome but this all going to take merely 2 to 3 seconds which is alright for a beginner. In the meantime you can use fillers like like, you know etc to buy you some time. Moreover once adequate in fluency gained everything would become very spontaneous for you and you won't need it anymore. I'm a public speaker myself and this technique worked perfectly fine for me. Hope this helps!
