Veena

"It has been a wise decision to choose Gopika Sruthilaya for learning Veena. We have convenient class timings and the individual attention makes our learning more comfortable. N C Sudhakar Sir teaches with a lot of patience and the course is structured in order to inculcate the students with most of the possible techniques and knowledge of Carnatic music. We also get to know the anecdotes about the songs we learn which makes the class even more interesting. "

Flute

"I have been learning from Sudhakar sir for about 4 years now, and it has really helped me improve both my interest and skills in flute. I have benefited a lot from sir's various methods of teaching from his wonderful YouTube videos of the songs to his teachings of the stories of each of the songs and their beautiful meanings. Even though I learn flute from him, he still helps me improve my singing skills. The classes are always really fun to attend, not only do I discover the secrets and messages of each and every song but I also get to learn about the various singers and flutists rendering of the same songs and raagas. This helps me improvise the music to my taste. I have played multiple games related to music and have learnt about other classical instruments as well, this gives me better exposure to the other kinds of music in this world. I wouldn't be able to play my flute this wonderfully without starting my classes with sir. I owe it all to him. "

Flute

"My daughter has been learning flute for the last 3+years from Sudhakar sir. She thoroughly enjoys her class. She is able to identify the ragas and most importantly sir teaches the meaning to each and every song. She is really blessed to have Sudhakar Sir as her guru. "

Vocal Music

"My learning experience with Sudhakar Sir has been very comprehensive. His balanced focus on the music theory and practical combined with quick anecdotes helps keep me engaged with the art. He also provides very valuable feedback with action items that push me to improve and set higher standards for myself. "

There are only 2 ways - one , you should memorize (or) two, you should be a prodigy. There are no shortcuts. I remember one occassion when Ravikiran (now gottuvadyam exponent) was a child surrounded by vidwans and wizards in Music Academy. Each vidwan asked in different permutations like - what ragam is 67th Melakartha ; what is the name of 3rd ragam in 6th chakra etc. etc.. Without a wink, he casually told the answers and was playing. So, if you are very particular in reciting or spelling out the melakartha ragas , then you have to memorize just like any other poems we did during our schooldays. Finally, what is the purpose you need to remember the melakartha ragas and their technical details. Are you preparing for any competitions or any other ? Fundamentally by looking at the arohanam and avarohanam, you can nearly find out the chakra and the melakartha number. Then you can refer the chart.for the name of the ragam.

Each instrument has its own specifics. In case of veena, there are many things that has to synchronise to play perfectly. At the outset, you must know the song that you are playing by heart. Secondly, you should start in the correct speed , so that you will be able to play the fast tempo, if any, in the song comfortably. Then your index and middle fingers should pluck the strings alternatively according to the thalam. Fourthly, your little fingers should put thalam correctly, because this is the one which is unique to veena, which is not available in other instruments. Fifthly, your left hand fingers should swipe on the frets smoothly according to the song. For this , you should be able to locate the swarasthanas even without light (ie. you should be familiar with the swarasthanas). If all these synchronize, then you can play perfectly. 2 classes per week is ok. You have to practise , which is compulsory for any instrument learners.

It is always better you know what you are playing. Definitely there is a difference playing a known music and just playing the notes. Then there are different levels. You'll be introduced to Varnams. Here you'll be given good exposure to different ragas. The full essence of every ragam is taught in 2 kalas. This may take about one-half yrs . After this level, you'll be taught Keerthanas. There is no end to learning this level. There are simple to most toughtest songs. Then you'll be taught to play manodharma sangeetham viz. Pallavi, niravals, kalpana swaras etc. Your guru will be the best guide to tell you when you are well equipped with playing veena on your own.
