Major problems faced by road transport in India, are...

1.The road network is inadequate, keeping in view the volume of traffic and passengers.

2. In India, There are multiple check-posts, toll tax and octoroon duties collection points on the roads which bring down the speed of the traffic, waste time and cause irritation to transporters.

3. Most of the roads are unmetalled in India and this limits their usage during the rainy season.

4. Roads are not maintained properly in India. Less than 0.1 percent of the national income is spent on the maintenance of roads in India.

5. One major problem on the Indian roads is the mixing of traffic. Same road is used by high speed cars, trucks, two wheelers, tractors etc. This in­creases traffic time, congestion and pollution and road accidents.

(ii) About half of the roads are unmetalled and this limits their usage during the rainy season.

(iii) The roadways are highly congested in cities.

(iv) Most of the bridges are old and narrow.

(v) Disrespect to the traffic rules is the major problem. Citizen have casual attitude towards traffic rules, which leads to accidents causing traffic jams.
