During the First World War, the British army recruited many people from rural India. To finance the defence expenditure, high custom duties and income taxes were imposed. During 1918-21, many parts of India were affected with shortage of crops. This caused resentment towards the British rule, and national movement got its boost.
On the other hand, the first World War broke the British Empire to a large extent, both politically and economically. The growth of the British empire declined and that too helped the growth of national movements in the British colonies. Furthermore, developments in transport/shipping and communications sector helped too.
Kihilafat movement was also responsible to the growth of national movement as after the end of first world War there were rumors peace treaty that was imposed on the Khalifa. It was considered a harsh treaty and muslims were very angry. Mahatman Gandhi used this as an opportunity to unite Muslims with Hindus. He launched khilafat movement to oppose it with the collaboration of both Hindus and Muslims. This was a huge boost to the growth of nationalism in India.
