According to the story, we can understand that the narrator can handle serious types of people calmly. He immediately understood the tricks problem. Tricki is not suffering any illness; he is sufferings from overfeeding. The dog gets well under the narrator's supervision and the natural environment of surgery.

He was very concerned for tricky's health as Mrs Pumphrey used to feed him a lot of calorie-rich food like ice cream, puddings, cakes and biscuits which spoiled the health of the dog and he became obese and sick. Adding to it, Mrs Pumphrey did not use to take him for a walk, which resulted in less calorie burn. The writer understood the condition of the dog by just looking at it. He told Mrs Pumphrey that surgery was the only solution. He took great care of tricky and helped him get well sooner. All because of this, we can say he was courteous and full of common sense.
