An ion is a positively or negatively charged atom (or group of atoms). An ion is formed by the loss or gain of electrons by an atom, so it contains an unequal number of electrons and protons. Example: Sodium ion Na+, magnesium ion Mg2+, chloride ion Cl–, and oxide ion O2–.

Anions are formed by gaining electrons.

Example:

Cl- is anion formed by gaining an electron by the Cl atom.

When an atom loses or gains electron it became ion. Ions are of two types positive ion called a cation and negative ion are called an anion.

Basically ions are the charged atoms or molecules. On the basis of type of charge on them, they are of the 2 types. (1) Cations (e. g. Ca++,Na+,Mg++ etc) (2)Anions (e.g. Cl-, F-,Br-, I- etc)

How it becomes Na+?

The atomic no of Na is 11 i.e. 1s2, 2s2,2p6, 3s1. As the last shell contains one unbalanced electron. Na(sodium) can easily give up this electron. As we know that no. of an electron is equal to the no. of protons. When Na releases 1 electron no of protons in the nucleus increases, hence Na becomes Na+.

An atom or molecule having a net charge (positive or negative) on it is called an Ion. Positively charged ion is called Cation, and negatively charged ion is called Anion. E.g., Sodium (Na) has 11 electrons in a neutral state, and by losing one electron, it forms a sodium cation (Na+), and Chlorine...

E.g., Sodium (Na) has 11 electrons in a neutral state, and by losing one electron, it forms a sodium cation (Na+), and Chlorine has 17 electrons in a neutral state. By gaining one electron, it forms chloride anion (cl-).

Other examples: Mg2+, Al3+, NO3-, and SO42-.

Ion is an electrically charged atom formed by the gain or loss of an electron. Positive ions are created by the loss of an electron from the neutral atom, and negative ion is formed by the gain of electrons to a neutral atom. Atoms gain or lose electrons to achieve stability.

Strive for Excellence. With my knowledge and excellent pedagogy skills you are sure to succeed.

An ion is any charged particle. Metals having excess free electrons tend to lose electrons and form positive ions called cation Na+, Ca2+. Similarly, non-metals tend to gain electrons and for negative ions called anions Cl-, O2- etc.
