Answer In the short story "The Enemy" by Pearl S. Buck, Dr. Sadao Hoki, a Japanese surgeon, faces a moral dilemma when he discovers an American prisoner of war (POW) washed ashore near his home. Despite the prevailing wartime hatred between the Japanese and Americans, Dr. Sadao decides to help the injured man rather than turning him in to the authorities.
Dr. Sadao and his wife, Hana, nurse the wounded soldier back to health in secret. However, as the man gains strength, Dr. Sadao realizes that keeping him hidden is becoming increasingly dangerous. To resolve the situation and protect himself and his family, Dr. Sadao ultimately decides to release the American prisoner.
Dr. Sadao is torn between his professional and moral duty as a healer and his loyalty to his country. Releasing the prisoner is a risky choice, as it goes against the prevailing wartime sentiments. Nevertheless, it is the only option Dr. Sadao sees to ensure the safety of both the American soldier and his own family. The story explores themes of humanity, morality, and the impact of war on individual choices.
