Different Types of Forces

Why do we learn physics and why is it so important to understand the nature of “Force”? It is because Physics is a natural science which helps us understand the act of Universe, where force is one of the most important energies of nature. When it comes to force, all types of forces are exerted as a response of connection or interaction between various sorts of objects in this universe. Generally, force is described as a push and pull of an object, thus force is a Vector Quality - depicted by magnitude and direction. Remember, force changes the motion of an object as well as the velocity of a mass.

Different Types of Forces

Scientifically, force is represented by the symbol, “F” in physics, and it is measured in the International System of Units (SI) of Newton’s. Today, as per the scientific disciplines, force has been divided into various types including, 1. Gravitational Force 2. Applied Force 3. Frictional Force 4. Normal Force 5. Spring Force 6. Tension Force and much more.

Gravitational Force: The type of force that attracts all the small and big masses including galaxies, stars, moon, planets and so on in the Universe is called Gravitational force. All objects in the universe including human experiences a force of gravity with other objects, this force pulls the masses towards the earth. Formula: Fgrav = m*g, where m = mass, where g = force of gravity.

Applied Force: The type of force which has been applied by one object to another object to pushed or pulled. For example; A person kicking a football. Simply, applied force is the force exerted on the football by an individual.

Normal Force: When a gravitational force pulls the masses towards the earth, the normal force is the force exerted on an object which is already in contact with another object (rest), to hold in the force of gravity. The normal force is referred to as perpendicular (at an angle of 90°) as it is directly perpendicular to the two surfaces in contact. For example Surface of a wall prevents things from falling.

Tension Force: The force that is exerted through a string, cable, rope etc pulling tight with forces from the significant distance (opposite side). For example: Pulling a rope or elastic with compelling from each other. Formula : T = mg + ma where, m = mass, g = gravitational force, a = acceleration and T = tension force.

Friction Force: The force exerted between two surfaces of an object or a material. Simply, the force that is created when the two surface slide against each other is known as Friction force. As per the scientific disciplines, this force has been divided into various types including, Dry friction, Fluid friction, Skin friction, Lubricated friction and Internal Friction.

Spring Force: The spring force is the force exerted when an object is compressed and stretched. As per the Hooke’s law, the force of the spring is directly proportional to the extension of the spring. Formula: F = k(x - x0), where , k = spring constant, xo = equilibrium position, x = move or changes of spring position from constant equilibrium position, F = spring force.
