Rotational motion can be defined as a motion of an object around a circular path, in a fixed orbit. It can also be defined as the motion of a body, in which all of its particles move in a circular motion with a common angular velocity, about a fixed point—for example, the rotation of Earth about its axis.

The rotation of an object about a fixed point can be of two directions: Clockwise and the anticlockwise direction. The energy produced due to this rotational motion is called rotational energy. There are many essential terms associated with rotational motion like torque, the moment of inertia, angular momentum etc.

  • Torque: The magnitude of force applied on a body, away from the point of application of force s called th torque. It is also called the "turning effect". For example, it is easier to push a door open at its ends, rather than at the hinges.
  • Moment of Inertia: It is a quantity that determines the amount of torque required to rotate an object, about its axis. It is also called the rotational inertia.
  • Angular momentum: It is a product of angular velocity and the moment of inertia, which determines the quantity of rotation of the body.

If a body is pivoted at a point and the force is applied on the body at a suitable point, it rotates the body about the axis passing through the pivoted point. This is the turning effect of the force and the motion of body is called the Rotational motion.

A rotation is a circular movement of an object around a center (or point) of rotation . A three-dimensional object always rotates around an imaginary line called a rotation axis. If the axis passes through the body's center of mass, the body is said to rotate upon itself, or spin.
