On a winter night, a train was coming from Agra to Delhi at a slow speed. The train was almost full to its capacity as people were visiting the Taj Mahal, suddenly the driver sighted another train at some distance ahead of him moving in the same direction on the same track but with lower speed. He applied the brakes to slow down his train and averted a major rail accident. The driver of the train was awarded for the same.

(i) Show that there will be no collision if the first train is moving with velocity v1 and velocity of other train is v2, if d > (v1 -v2)2 / 2a.

(ii) Determine the relative velocity of two objects moving with same velocity in the same directions.

(iii) What is the abilities of driver which you will appreciate?

This sum driver attention is excellent. But judgement is distance and applying driver performance. v^2 - u^2 = 2aS 0 - (v1 - v2)^2 = 2a dd = (v1 - v2 ) ^2 / 2a I thing mode answer.

Initial velocity of train 1 is v1
Initial velocity of train 2 is v2
Relative velocity of train 1 wrt train 2 is v1 - v2

Assuming distance between first train and second train is d when driver noticed.
Using law of motion

Final velocity of train 1 is 0
-ve acceleration as its retardation.

v^2 - u^2 = 2aS
0 - (v1 - v2)^2 = 2a d
d = (v1 - v2 ) ^2 / 2a

It means train is going to hit train 2 when distance is equal to RHS.
So d must be greater than RHS to make train stop earlier.

Drivers attentiveness is to be appreciated. And judgement for distance and applying brakes asap.

Why does a swimmer push the water backwards?
According to newton's 3rd law of motion in each and every action there is an equal and opposite force. So if he push the water backwards then according to the above principle or law he will be able to move forward.

Yes in any vacuum place only gravitational force will work on it and there won't be any air to stop it from falling faster.
