Hello, Nice to E-meeting you.
Yes, the R sound is indeed made the same by Brits and Americans, the difference being when we choose to say it: Americans always pronounce it, but British has rules or patterns regarding when it’s pronounced, omitted or added as an extra sound.
I agree regarding the British patterns of pronunciation for R.
I can’t entirely agree with anyone, really, about the mechanics of making the American R sound. I’ve taught this day in, day out for decades, to children and adults from just about every country in the world. Native speakers don’t make this sound in the way most people are taught in their English-as-a-Second-or-Foreign-Language classes.
As I realized that the traditional, world-wide way of teaching R—from the L position, disengage the tongue from the roof of the mouth, and then curl the tongue back in an arc while vocalizing—well, this could be a way to demonstrate the sound. Still, when native speakers start talking and stringing sounds together quickly, they don’t do this. It’s not efficient, nor is it easy to make R in this way.
American English uses two ways to create the R sound, based on the R’s position in the word and relationship to sounds before and after it. One R sound is more like a vowel, and the other is a little bit like a consonant (but just a little bit).
The ‘vowel-like’ R
The most common R sound follows a vowel and is often at the end of a word or the end of an unstressed syllable. We’ll call it vowel + R. These are all the /er/ sounds made by spellings: ER, IR, UR. This sound is made with the tongue anchored to the upper teeth at its midpoint edges, with the front of the tongue resting behind lower teeth. This front part of the tongue then flutes inward, and the tip curls slightly, forming a sort of spout. The upper lip muscle pulls up a bit and out, as the neutral vowel sound before R ends, and the R sound commences. You are, in effect, making a pitcher shape with the tip of your tongue and the sound slides forward and out. One of the biggest problems for English learners is that they don’t make the vowel+R last long enough to finish the R sound fully. It’s tough to describe in words; much easier to show visually.
For AR, OR, EAR: Connect this ER sound to the end of ? for the word ‘or’ /?+er/, to ? for the word ‘air’ /?+er/, to ? for the word ‘ear’ /?+er/, etc.
The ‘a-little-bit-more-like-a-consonant’ R
It’s easiest to understand how native speakers shape this if you say it immediately after an R-final word, e.g. car race.
Native speakers will leave their tongues low for the final R in the car, and immediately start the initial R in the race without a break between the words; they’ll use a liaison to join the two words and say one after the other without breaking the R sound.
As the sound continues from car to race, the tongue tip rises and arc back a bit, but it starts from that low final R position, and the tip probably doesn’t rise above mid-level in the mouth, and curls back just slightly until the R sound is finished. It is nothing like the tense, large tongue arch taught to English learners. It’s small and relaxed.
I hope this will help and answer the above question. I’ll stop now before this turns into another topic of the book.
Regards!
