Adjust the resonant head: The resonant head, or bottom head, of the drum affects its overtones and resonance. Thinner resonant heads are more sensitive, while thicker ones sound darker. Consider the frequency: Lower frequencies are better for rock, while higher frequencies are better for jazz. Tune tom-toms to a scale: You can tune several tom-toms to a musical scale to play a melody.
