Since the advent of Green Revolution in early 1970s, the country has avoided famine even during adverse weather conditions. It has made India self-sufficient in foodgrains during the last 50 years. It introduced the Indian farmer to the improved cultivation of wheat and rice, in particular by using HYV seeds. The same piece of land would now produce far larger quantities of foodgrains than was possible earlier. There was a large increase especially in the production of wheat. The success of wheat was later replicated in rice. The highest rate of growth has been achieved in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, where foodgrain production reached an all time high of 78.9 million tonnes in 2012-13.
