Teaching Experience in detail in Class I-V Tuition
The most interesting and important years in the development of a child is between the age group of 3-9 years.A very interesting age full of energy and enthusiasm. The experiences and learning for me as a teacher was immense. Children are taught concepts by using examples related to their environment & surroundings. Each child requires encouragement to participate in every activity. It needs to be a two way learning … a teacher should not be the giver of information, instead, contribution and questioning by children is a must . Self learning should be nurtured in children by doing research work , gathering information and then share it with the class. Thematic learning too is very important at this stage . Daily in the zero period I would spend 15 minutes with the children doing mental maths and spelling.I realized they greatly enjoyed it and did not want to miss it even for a single day. The ones who were not good to begin with got better by the day , which also gave them confidence and they performed better in other subjects. Discussing a certain piece of information from the news paper and having group discussions helped them feel confident and improve their spoken language skills. To improve language skills writing daily new words on one side of the board & then ensuring that the words are often used by the teacher encourages children to do the same. Collecting things from the environment and then talking about it .. eg a rose flower - it’s color, shape, size and texture & feel.Articles that can be made from it, eg : rose water, perfume, garlands for gods and people . Teacher should add information that the flower can be pressed & dried & used for making cards etc. It was interesting to observe some children memorise texts and recite it without the book. Hence, to enhance their reading skills sentence strips using words from the text is very useful. Rhyming words should be taught through the medium of poem reading & recital. Group story building exercise helps and enable a child to think. Social studies / EVS topics like festivals can be taught through dramatization. This includes poetry, music and acting. Story writing - enacting the story by a group of students and narration by an adult, two or three times enables them to write and narrate stories in the correct sequence. In Maths, introduction of concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division by the use of concrete objects enhances learning in children. Learning basic science concepts can be made easy by practically doing, observing & evaluating the phenomenon. Developing soft skills at each stage depending on a child’s age and ability is an important exercise teacher must routinely conduct. Instilling the habit of sharing and caring in children is of great importance in today’s materialistic world. Outdoor activities help a child to expend his pent up energy and be more active in the class. Too many distractions like TV and Online games, has reduced attention span of children leading to ADHD. We as teachers have learnt to identify such students and the need to sensitize all the students about these issues.Other children of the class must be taught to empathize with such children and extend emotional & physical support to their peers .
