Japanese has three ways of studying and writing- Hiragana, katakana and kanji.Hiragana and katakana are two different ways to write the same set of 46 sounds. Hiragana are Japanese letters while katakana is used to write english letters in Japanese. Kanji are symbols that mean a whole word or idea. Kanjis are mostly used in writing. All billboards have kanjis in Japan but without learning hiragana, and katakana , kanjis can't be learnt.
