I am a professional teacher (CBSE - Physics) with experience more than 13 years. HC Verma is the best reference book for class IX and X Physics. But I would suggest to complete the NCERT textbook first and then only start with HC Verma. Sometimes it might appear that the book is too tough to solve (specifically the numerical questions), but if you can crack it, it will help you a lot.

I am a professional teacher for CBSE students (science group) since last 13 years. I always prefer to complete NCERT books first and then start at least one set of reference books. I usually prefer Oswal books. Also Oswal's chapterwise/topicwise question bank is a must for the board preparation which you should start at least from class IX.
