Korean language has different levels of politeness, which are used to show respect or formality in communication. The three main levels are:
하십시오체 (Hasipsioche): This is the formal or polite level. It is often used in public speaking, formal writing, or when addressing someone of higher social status, such as elders or strangers. Verbs in this form typically end in -하십시오 (-hasipsio).
Example: 가다 (to go) becomes 가십시오 (please go).
해요체 (Haeyoche): This is the polite or standard level and is commonly used in everyday conversation, especially with people of the same or slightly higher social status. Verbs in this form typically end in -해요 (-haeyo).
Example: 가다 (to go) becomes 가요 (go).
해체 (Haecho): This is the informal or casual level. It is used among close friends, family members, or people of the same age group. Verbs in this form typically end in -해 (-hae).
Example: 가다 (to go) becomes 가 (go).
It's important to use the appropriate level of politeness based on the relationship and social context. Failing to use the correct level of politeness can be perceived as disrespectful in Korean culture. Additionally, there are special verb forms for making requests, giving commands, and asking questions, each with its own level of politeness.
