All Excel courses that are currently being offered online as well as classroom sessions have a lot in common – In fact they are all the same thing. Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, VBA etc. The course content is also very similar and you will find there is hardly any difference.
To be frank I have been taking Excel classes and I teach the same things and here I am going to share with you how you can Learn Excel on your own. Yes, you are right – that is the best way to learn Excel and I am telling this from my experience of teaching the subject.
So are we ready ? Here it goes –
- Do what interests you most.
Excel as a tool is an excellent one and has a lot of functionality and features built in and unless you are looking for some specific things to do – it would be difficult to teach / learn EVERYTHING in a short span of time. Find out what interests you and Start from there.
- Quiz yourself on how to do stuff
Discover new areas to learn by finding ways to do it using Excel. I had a student who started playing with “If then else” function and found out various new ways of doing his analysis on his own.
- Play with Excel
This is really important – you must play with Excel and enjoy it and find your way through. It is one of the best ways to learn.
- Do not try advanced features in the beginning
Most times trainees fail to learn because of an overdose of instructions and their eagerness to get to the ADVANCED features quickly. This does not serve any purpose at all other than discouraging prospective good users from using the tool effectively. Taking small steps ACTUALLY helps. Do not try and change gears unless you are comfortable in using the features / functions that you are taught.
- Practice what you learn
Like #3 above this is very important too. Practice and put into use what you learnt . Once you are able to use it in your day –to –day work learning Excel will be easy. Believe me.
