Teaching Experience in detail in Vocal Music classes

I conduct lessons on a one-to-one basis. My vocal journey has been filled with immense learning, and I believe it will continue throughout life. The teaching methodology I use is slightly unorthodox in the sense that I foster creativity in the student, and not encourage mere rote learning. My mantra is simple: "Focus on the basics and master them well. The advanced stuff just comes to you gradually". Every person has the ability to sing, but it's just the mindset that comes in the way. I thoroughly encourage each of my students to believe in their inherent potential. As cliched as it may sound, I teach to transform lives, with whatever little that I know. One-on-one vocal lessons will also cover vocal techniques, rare stuff such as cardio singing and a lot of vocal warm ups that catapult the voice to a whole new higher dimension. Songwriting is also covered wherein I make the student unleash their inherent creative side. Music cannot be only academic, it has to be soulful and should transport minds.

To get into playback, incorporating the elements of good voice texture, feel, ability to improvise are a must. Indian classical music is an ocean, and even various famous pop stars like Michael Jackson have learned the same from classical legends.

While it is not a necessity to learn Indian classical music for years to get into playback, learning the very basics and understanding how they apply to light music is a must.

Get the feel of the song right. One good way is to first recite the lyrics in the correct meter and pronounce as if you're talking to someone. Do this 10-15 times, then it's just about singing as if you are conveying the same message. For instance, "tu hi re tere bina mai kaise jiyu" can be expressed... ...more

Do this 10-15 times, then it's just about singing as if you are conveying the same message. For instance, "tu hi re tere bina mai kaise jiyu" can be expressed in multiple ways. Get the feel right by really imagining the situation and making it clear in your head. Rest is just extrapolation

Like western musical notations is there any Indian music notation?

Yes there is. There are seven shuddha notes, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni, out of which four can be flat (komal) Re Ga Dha Ni and one can be sharp (Tivra) Ma depending on the composition. Say you start from C major scale, the notes that can be used are C D E F G A B. Here, C = Sa, D = Re, E = Ga, F = Ma, G... ...more

If you flatten the third, sixth and seventh notes, you get the minor C scale --> C D Eb F G Ab Bb. here C = Sa, D = Re, Eb = Komal Ga, F = Ma, G = Pa, Ab=Komal Dha, Bb=Komal Ni. Once you master any given technique, the rest is just extrapolation.

Are these ragas used in classical music only?

You can use raagas in light music too. Even in Western pop music, there are compositions that belong to the minor scale, major scale, harmonic minor scale, pentatonic minor, blues scales, etc which is nothing but an extrapolation of raagas learnt in Hindustani music. Basically, music comprises of 12 notes (22 shrutis) and all the music around the world is made using different permutations and combinations of the notes. In Bollywood music for instance, there are raagas such as Yaman that is used extensively in songs. Jab deep jale aana, Naam gum jaayega are exampes. Laal ishq for instance has a close resemblance to Maru Bihag raag. The only difference is, the rigid rules that a particular raag from Indian classical music sometimes puts, are not present in Light music. There is a freedom of tweaking the notes to convey a certain feeling. For instance, we can always use a shudh Ni in an otherwise Bhimpalasi dominated light music composition.
