Hard enough to make the string touch the fret. Not the fretboard, not as hard as possible only hard enough for the string to touch the fret.

It should only touch the fret so that it limits the vibrating length. Press the strings with the very tips of your fingers. They're harder than the fleshy part of the flat of the finger, and that means you'll need less pressure

When playing the guitar, you should apply just enough pressure to the strings to produce a clear note and make them contact the fret. Pressing too hard can make it harder to play notes, tire out your hands, and slow you down. It can also wear out your guitar and change the pitch of the note.

Instead of pressing hard you should focus on your thumb pressing bcs if you correctly press your thumb then you don't have to press too hard on strings
