Kids can grasp quickly through visualisation and experience. Instead of teaching them through the usual book and pen method, try something else. For example, teach basic mathematics by applying it to real-life examples. There are also many resources online which helps students grasp ideas through a video presentation.
Also, do not forget to compliment and encourage them.
