The first chapter explains the kinds of food that we and other living beings eat and the source of those.
If we list the various types of food that we eat, for example, rice, dal, sabzi, chappati, etc., we would find that most of these come from plants. Plants are the primary source of food ingredients. Some such elements are grains, cereals, vegetables and fruits.
Following are the edible parts of a plant :
Animals also have a significant role in our diet. They provide us with milk, meat products, eggs and honey. Cows, goats and buffaloes (cattle) are some common animals which give us milk. Bees collect nectar from flowers, convert it into honey and store it in their hive. When we find such a beehive, we collect the food stored by the bees like honey.
Cattle, bees and fishes are grown commercially as well for large scale production.
Classification of animals :
1. Animals which eat only plants or plant products are called herbivores.
2. Animals which eat other animals are called carnivores.
3. Some animals which eat both plants and animals are called omnivores.
Exercise: 1. List ten animals and classify them as herbivores, carnivores or omnivores. In which category will human beings come in. 2. Examine the edible parts of the plant and state an example for each. For instance, Root - Carrot (It grows underground as part of the root).
