Covalent bonds are formed by sharing electrons (i.e., it does not involve the transfer of any electrons from one atom to another).
Since carbon has four valence electrons, it would have to either gain or lose those 4 electrons to form a bond. However, that would require a massive amount of energy, so covalent bonds help carbon avoid that, and it can instead form a bond without losing or gaining electrons, i.e., by sharing.
