The atmospheric nitrogen is inert, so plants can't absorb this nitrogen. This nitrogen needs to be converted in that particular (nitrates and nitrites)form which plants can absorb easily. this process of converting atmospheric nitrogen into the stable compound which further can be converted into nitrates and nitrites is called Nitrogen fixation.
