Mostly for Carnatic style, 7 or 8 is the age in which they can play on a G scale flute. I have found that for some kids, the holes are too big on a G scale flute, so I don' t start classes till they are about 7 or 8. In some rare cases we have used A sharp for beginners. (6.5 as they say in Carnatic style/scale) We start them if they are beginners on G scale whatever be their age. It is easier to play on a G flute for beginners. If someone is used to blowing the flute and dabbling on it, say playing some simple tunes, etc, and if they are older, like more than 18ish, then if it is comfortable to play both on blowing and in the fingering part, then we can use D # or E. read less
