I will try to explain in the most straightforward way possible for me, without involving scientific terms anyone can find it on the internet.
Stars are formed in GROUPS inside stellar nurseries, which contains neutral hydrogen or molecular hydrogen and dust (and other gases as well, but these are the starting ingredients of stellar formation - fundamental). Everything in the universe moves towards and around a gravitational centre and so does the gases in a stellar nursery, so they eventually form lumps and keeps collecting enough mass from the surrounding while the region close to the centre of the piece becomes the core of the so-called protostar (not a star yet).
The increased pressure in those regions raises the temperature and when the core reaches a temperature of 10 million degrees (minimum temperature required to fuse hydrogen), nuclear fusion starts and would then be called a STAR (that's in short, without going into the features and other ways of reaching the requirements and steps in between).
Depending on the mass collection and the kind of matter those are, the reactions, and so it's type and fate differs.
