If the atom/molecule loses an electron, it becomes +ve charged and called a cation, if it gains an electron it becomes -ve charged and is called an anion. Some examples of cation are Na(+), Ca(2),H(+).etc. Some examples of anion are Cl(-), F(-), O(-2).
