A charged atom is called an ion or a radicle. It is formed due to the loss or gain of an electron. If it loses an electron, it gets a positive charge and is called cation.eg: Na by loss of electron becomes Na+, sodium cation. If an atom gains an electron, it receives a negative charge and is called an anion, eg.: Cl gains an electron and becomes Cl- and is called chloride anion.
