The force applied contains both components perpendicular and parallel to the door. It is called a moment. But only perpendicular components causes rotation of the door. The product of r and perpendicular component of force is called torque. You can verify this applying the same force by putting your hand at some angle at one time and perpendicular to the door at another time.
