Covalent bonds are formed by sharing pair of electrons with other atoms to achieve stability. Carbon has the maximum number of 4 covalent bonds because of its unique valency. It has a very high tendency to form bonds easily with any atom and form a new compound if we compare carbon with other atoms.

The covalent bond shares electron pair between atoms and carbon have 4 electron pair to share which is the maximum number of electron pair to share because of which it can form multiple compounds with different atoms and with its self as well to achieve maximum stability. Hence, in this way, the covalent bond is essential for carbon.
