XLOOKUP can return more than one value with a regular formula in a single cell. The number of values returned can change with the function parameters. VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP need a separate formula in each cell (or an array formula entered in a fixed range of cells).
XLOOKUP can return value for all the matches. VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP can only ever return the first match.
XLOOKUP can return the last matching value. VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP can return the last matching value only if it is also the first matching value.
XLOOKUP can return a value from a column to left of lookup column or above the lookup row. VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP cannot do this at all; INDEX & MATCH can, but at the cost of more complexity.
XLOOKUP doesn’t recalculate when a value not part of the lookup column or return column(s) changes. VLOOKUP does.
The lookup column in an XLOOKUP formula may be an array expression, such as to handle multiple criteria. VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP can do that only if you put an auxiliary column to the left (or above) of your return column (or row).
XLOOKUP may be substituted for pretty much any VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP or INDEX & MATCH formula.
1. Bidirectional Lookup: XLOOKUP can search for a value both horizontally and vertically, allowing you to look up data in any direction. VLOOKUP is limited to vertical searches, and HLOOKUP is limited to horizontal searches.
2. Return Array: XLOOKUP can return an entire array of values, not just a single value. This is useful when you need to retrieve multiple items based on a lookup criterion. VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP only return a single value.
3. Search Mode Options: XLOOKUP provides different search modes, such as exact match, wildcard match, and approximate match with optional wildcards. This gives you more flexibility compared to VLOOKUP, which is primarily designed for exact matches, and HLOOKUP, which also has limitations in terms of matching options.
4. Handling Errors: XLOOKUP has built-in error handling. It allows you to specify what value or action to take if the lookup result is not found (e.g., return a specific value or return the closest match). VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP often require additional functions like IFERROR to achieve similar error handling.
5. Dynamic Arrays: XLOOKUP is designed to work seamlessly with dynamic arrays in Excel, allowing for more efficient handling of large datasets. This feature is not available in VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP, which often require additional functions to handle array-like operations.
