JLPT refers to "Japanese Language Proficiency Test". This test is the standard at which one's Japanese language competency is graded and certified; this certification is accepted and acknowledged globally. JLPT is conducted by The Japan Foundation, functioning under the umbrella of Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). This test is divided into 5 levels, with growing difficulty and the N5 level is the most basic level, i.e., the first level. The levels are as follows: Basic I = N5, Basic II = N4, Intermediate = N3, Advanced = N2, Expert = N1.
