Learning programming is more than learning a language. Let me divide your effort into few chunks. Learning the fundamentals/theory of programming; This might take anywhere from one months to at least 6 month (1 semester in a university undergrad course). Learning the art of developing algorithm; This part is very squiggly and ill defined. People spend most of their professional carrier learning this. Learning the syntax of the programming language; this is the recurring part that you have to do while learning multiple languages. The concepts remain same; only the language syntax changes. For a person well conversant in the above 2, mere learning this would be a piece of cake. I would say 2 weeks. For you particular ( a person with no prior programming experience), I will expect about 9 (5+3+1)months to completely understand and write Java programs.
