Covalent means sharing of valance electrons by two atoms. As the name suggests, "co" means sharing, and "valent" means valance of electrons.
When one atom of carbon tries to fulfil its outer shell by 8 electrons for being stable and satisfied, it shares its free electrons with other atoms, and the other atom will also. So it shares its electrons with carbon; hence, both the atoms make covalent bonds stable. Carbon has four valence electrons unique because it is difficult to find a donor atom for many such electrons.
Also, carbon requires a lot of energy if it wants to give up these all atoms, so it is a good option for carbon to find a partner atom and share some with it to be stable.
