Articles - Lesson 2.
We say 'a uniform', a European, a one rupee coin. Though these words begin with vowels, we do not put 'an' before them. It is because:-
> Uniform is pronounced as you-ni-form.
> European as You-ro-pean.
> One rupee as vun/wun.
Thus, their sounds correspond to consonants (Y,u/w) and not vowels. So we put "a" and not ' an' before them.
'The'
The articles 'the' is used before Proper nouns:
> The Bhagwat Gita
> The Ganga.
Also, 'the' is used when we talk about a particular thing.
I met a girl on the street. ( 'a girl' means any girl)
The girl whom I met on the street. ( 'the girl' means particular girl)
