Ions are the charged species. Ion formed when an atom gain or loss the electron.
If an atom gains the electron, it acquires negative charged, and now it's not an atom, it is an ion. And negatively charged ions are known as an anion. When an atom loses the electron, it acquires positive charges and known as a cation.
