What is yoga based on your personal experiences?
First, I would like to point out that its not "Yoga" it's "Yog."
Yog, to put it simply, is gaining mastery over the mind and observing your thoughts when you are holding a challenging posture. It is focusing on your breath and regulates it. Yog is not just about Asanas; Yog is much more beyond that.
Hata Yog is just one of the eight forms of Yog. You can practice Yog in your day to day life, even when you are doing your house chores, or working, or studying etc.
What we need to learn is Yog off the mat and Beyond Physical. Yog does NOT make you lose weight. That's the biggest misconception being peddled by the western influence about our own culture and tradition.
Happiness, clarity of thoughts, body flexibility, removal of evil thoughts are all by-products of doing Yog. Yog, in its simple form, is gaining mastery over the mind.

Yoga initially was like any other workout for me: stretching, blood flow etc. But as I progressed in my practice, the most significant change I started to notice was paying attention to details in my everyday observation. This, in itself, is a significant breakthrough for me as I started seeing things more 'clearly'. This practise gradually seeps into your inward introspection as well, especially when coupled with breathing techniques like pranayama. So for me, the most significant change was an observation, internal and external.
