Active And Passive Voice
When emphasis is to be given to the doer, a sentence is written in Active voice. If the action is to be given the emphasis, it is written in Passive voice.
Let us look at the following sentence.
The baby eats an apple. - Active Voice
In the above sentence, The baby / eats / an apple.
(doer) / (action) /
The doer (baby) is given the emphasis. i.e., what is the baby doing?
Now, let’s write this way:
An apple is eaten by the baby. - Passive Voice
In this sentence, An apple / is eaten / by the baby.
/ (action) / (doer)
In this sentence, the emphasis is given on what is being eaten?
To change from Active to Passive, it is important to know the past participle (V3) form of the verb.
In other words, the subject and the object of the sentence interchange their places while the verb, retaining its tense, takes the passive form.
