In General writing task 1: try to find the reason why you are writing the letter. Break your questions and note the key points. It will help you elaborate on your letter. See if the letter is formal or informal. This will help you to maintain the tone in your letter. Lastly focus on linking words which will help you in the continuity of paragraph.
Academic Task 1 - is about graphs, maps, bar charts, table, pie charts - so practising more of such sample letters will help you improve your score.

For Academic, writing task 1 is data interpretation. It is understanding pictorial representation and putting them in words. Varieties of pictures such as line graph, bar chart and the pie chart will be asked. One is expected to understand the 'overall picture', 'major changes', and 'the flow of the changes' and write these in words. Spend about 5 minutes to study the picture, make notes of the 'changes' and begin to write.
For General, writing task 1 is letter writing. Understand whether it is a formal, informal, or semi-formal letter writing. Start learning appropriate words, phrases and sentences depending upon the situations and contexts.
